Empress Tachibana no Kachiko (橘嘉智子) (786-850 AD) was head-over-heels devoted to Buddhism. But writing a sappy song or tattooing “Siddhartha 4 ever” on her bicep was too mundane for this religious ruler. Instead, ambitious Kachiko decided to teach the people of Kyōto a morbid lesson from beyond the grave.

Empress Kachiko tried to teach Buddhist principles to everyone she met – but her would-be students were too distracted by Kachiko’s beauty to listen. Every time the empress wanted to get cracking on some serious spiritual contemplation, she had to field catcalls and inappropriate suggestions from the men around her.

When Kachiko died at 64, she left an unusual will. Instead of asking for a royal funeral, a statue, or a nice commemorative park bench, Kachiko asked for her rotting corpse to be left lying in the street. The empress hoped that seeing her beautiful body develop a smell and be torn apart by wild animals would finally teach her people to think less of earthly pleasures.

So the empress’s body was dressed in simple robes and put on the streets of Kyōto, where it rotted away until only bone fragments were left. The spot became known as Katabira no Tsuji, the Crossroad of Corpses.

Kachiko’s morbid final farewell was tied to a Buddhist tradition that originated in India around the 3rd or 4th century AD. It was not unusual for people who could not afford a funeral to leave the bodies of their deceased family members in the open, where anyone could watch them decay (in Japan, internment was not common until the 14th century). Buddhist monks considered watching bodies decay an act of reflection, and a reminder not to be tempted by beautiful women.

A nun at the Hokkeji nunnery named Zen’un once predicted that a young Kachiko would be the mother of both an emperor and an empress. Zen’un’s prediction came true when Kachiko married Emperor Saga and had a baby prince, Ninmyō (who later became the emperor) and a princess, Seishi (who married Emperor Junna and became the empress).

When she became the empress, Kachiko sent a Japanese monk to China to bring Chan Buddhism to Japan, where it became Zen Buddhism. She also founded a temple complex/nunnery west of Kyoto called Danrinji. Because of this, she is sometimes known as Empress Danrin.
